I've used both (Silversmith's action is MUCH faster) and, while they'll make cosmetic repairs on brass or copper or a number of metals above silver in the electrochemical series, it's not clear that they'll actually plate silver onto already existing silver. That is, will they prevent erosion of a silver plating? The caswell literature doesn't address this in a satisfactory manner, but since the action of Silversmith/silverplater is chemical, I would have to guess not. And the metallic layer they put down on brass or copper is VERY thin.
But yeah, they're great for covering up scratches.
