A couple of months ago, Leland (whose post is below) did a test of different types of tubas, sousaphones, and a contrabass or two. Perhaps he would repost the results of that test, but in my opinion, it all depends on what you're doing. In terms of sound, both can have good or bad tone, depending on who's playing and if it is a good horn or not, just like any other tuba. In terms of volume, the full size and larger contras have no problem producing as much power and sound as a sousaphones, if the people playing them have good technique.
