Actually, I've always wondered what the motivation was to wash out the large branches of the isntrument. It was my impression that snaking out the leadpipe and perhaps a few of the smaller tubes would take care of almost all contaminants.
This, of course, does not apply where old spitballs, bottles and shoes have become lodged in the bottom bow of a tuba.
Any thoughts on this?
