The Mt. Prospect, IL Band sponsors the Do-It-Yourself Sousa Band once a year in June. It is conducted by Sousa expert, Dr. Michael Golemo, who dresses up as Sousa and takes on his "personna." Anyone with any level of proficiency on any band instrument can play. There are 2 or 3 rehearsals, and then a public outdoor performance. 1999's performance included approximately 150 musicians from as far away as Alabama.
Gene Pokorny's schedule precluded his participation this year. But he ususally does join the band--on 3rd clarinet! Meanwhile, Gene's wife, Beth Lodal, plays in the tuba section.
There was a picture of Gene, Beth, and Rich Mateyko in the TUBA Journal a couple of years ago with an article about the Do-It-Yourself Sousa Band. I cannot recall which issue.
