The most serious tubists play CC mostly. The F tuba (in America) is a specialized instrument that has serious limitations for MOST applications. One does NOT need a compensating system, but only with 5 valves can you get all of the notes required to play ALL of the repertoire. Pistons slur more smoothly, rotors are faster. Please be advised that you ask GOOD and very involved questions. My response is, at best, an oversimplification.
