Matt's a great teacher, a great friend, and an ali. There are plenty of old tuba teachers in colleges everywhere that can tell you how to play a solo, but not too many of them can tell you the acceptable range of tempo's to use on each excerpt. If you want to teach go anywhere, if you want to win an audition start with Matt, he'll show you what fundamentals you need for an audition.

As for Dave Kirk, I can't tell you much more than to just buy Houston's Rouse flute concerto CD. There's a brass chorale in the 3rd mov that if it doesn't make you love an orchestral tuba sound then you must be dead. I've met him once, the night of Mahler 6 last year. Can't say enough about his playing.
