The receiver on my York Euphonium (three-valve, circa 1900) was a home-made mess which fell off. The intonation was previously very flat; without the receiver it is closer to A440. My Bach 61/2 AW mouthpiece only goes into the lead pipe about 1/2". The main tuning slide is W-shaped, so I suspect I have a "low-pitch" horn. Should I have the main tuning slide shortened so I no longer have to lip every pitch up? Could I possibly change the lead pipe to raise the pitch? Is it silly to even consider adding a 4th valve to a horn of this vintage? I have to say, I love the sound of this euphonium, and am willing to experiment.
