Practical playing range

Here goes one of those "flame thrower magnet" questions, what is a decent PRACTICAL high end for most players. I know some folks play way up in the treble staff on BBb horns all the time, but if you were writing a piece that would be played by musicians with a wide range of skills, on different pitched horns, what would it be? I have textbooks that suggest the upper range of a BBb horn is the top line of the staff, but that seems a bit low. I'm working with a composer who writes in third line G's all the time but hears complaints...... Thanx
