The session you were referring to was in the early 1980's with Tommy Johnson playing tuba. Apparently they were attempting to record the music again digitally to the old animation then rerelease the film, but this was extremely difficult because the original recording was not done to a click track and therefore the performance could not be reproduced exactly. Disney put an end to the sessions after a few days when it was clear they could not sync exactly with the old animation. I think this is why the new version has new animation, so that the animation could be completed after the music was recorded.
