if you decide to use pliers, i recommend using a Rubbermaid drain plug (the thin disc of rubber) to cushion the pliers. This lets you see what you're doing without having to get the pliers right on there.

the tapping with a rawhide mallet really SHOULD work however unless it's been stuck forever and is rusted shut in which case penetrating oil may be necessary.

Always be sure to clean your caps regularly. They get that green gunk in the threads, which freezes 'em up if you don't get it out. You should also unscrew them on a regular basis to prevent them from sticking.
