I used to double on euphonium and trombone. I was lucky that I needed a bright sound on both instruments and my 6.5 AL worked fine. I would suggest that you try some smaller mouthpieces as you said that helped your problem. I would try some Dennis Wick mouthpieces, they seem to have good intonation for me. Also, the more you play the easier it will be to keep the euphonium in tune, I stopped doubling because my tuba playing was suffering and I didn't have the time to keep everything up.
