Just one thing to add to Matt's instructions--place the spring canister on an opened drill press vise or some other surface that will contact the outer edge of the canister and allow the center section to be pushed out by the shaft (look closely and you'll see a dividing line between the outer casing and the inner disc section. To put the thing back together, close the vise so that the disc section now rests on the jaws with the bearing section between the jaws. Use a piece of tubing over the bearing (or even a socket wrench socket) on the canister top side. Tap on the tubing or socket to push the parts back together again.

When you load new springs, have plenty of band-aids on hand--you'll need them. Apply a bit of oil to the spring before you close things up.
