Umm, being a tuba player, I'm not sure, but I think they are used mostly for practice, like when you go on a trip and can't fit your full sized horn in the suitcase. I don't know how they sound, but probably not very, or they would be much more popular! (But good enough for practicing on holiday, or even on the commute!)
p.s. I am sure someone can direct you to a trumpet-specific bulletin board where you will have more luck.
