I agree so much with everything else you said, but one statement:

mystifies me. If you buy a new tuba, then sell a used tuba, you would surely lose money compared to buying a used tuba and then selling a used tuba. You shouldn't lose ANYTHING on the one bought used, unless it's damaged.
