I shift. I don't know what it's called. I don't even know how I learned to do it. But my low-range sound is great. (Actually it's called the "John R. Shift" 'cause it's how I do it!)

Currently I am working on a cool piece called "Slonimsky's Earbox" by John Adams. I'll be performing it soon. It has an FF-slurred section that is all in a pedal C-Db-Eb-F-Gb and up to a low Ab. I am really glad I have a 5-valve 6/4 horn now. It is extremely physical playing and I'm also glad I work out regularly and am in great physical shape.

The Point is this: My low range is improving by playing a lot down there. Practice low-range scale patterns, Prokofiev Symphonies, the Ride, Symphonic Metamorphosis...anything that gets you into that range. But be prepared for hyperventilation and fatigue!
And try a shift that works for you!

Good luck!
