The issue of slurring is an interesting point brought forward by Rick's response. My present tuba is rotary-valved, and my previous tuba was also. The rotary-valves are very easy to maintain and work flawlessly......even when I forget to take care of them. I tend to think that the really good piston valved tubas do allow for cleaner slurs and maybe more forgiving for precise articulation. I played piston-valved tuba all through school, so I remember some of the luxury of that action......I also remember sticking valves!! I love my rotary valved tuba and I can't imagine switching back to pistons for this fairly minor issue........like maybe I should be practicing now!!
