All of these posts about this subject are very accurate, however...
Noone has mentioned going guard or reserve. I went to boot camp(Army) over the summer and did that and my 'training' (4 weeks involving playing with a active duty band for about 4 hours a day then getting the rest of the day off- unless change of command/pass and review or other stuff like that). Then its back up to Michigan where 'drill' (mostly) consists of one rehearsal/ performance(in blues, oh yeah) a week and that's it. You come out as an E-4, and the guard-combined with what the university PAYS me for being in the guard pays almost full tuition!!! And that's not including my pay for drills. It's a REAL GOOD part-time gig, and the uniform really attracts the women.
Oh, did I forget to mention that I made about 4K this summer just doing basic+AIT(training with the band). You should definately look into it. DONT LISTEN TO YOUR RECRUITER!!! Mine didn't even know the Guard had bands.
Just my $0.02 for what it's worth
