Go to college is my advice. There are many qualified teachers at the university level. True, many push the Band Dirctor Route but there is no law that you must do it their way. My professor doesn't like to teach performance majors but he very good and gives me the same lessons as a performance major. What is important is that you push yourself. When someone bring up the band director thing just smile and nod, unless you want a sermon. ;) College is wonderful, and unlike the military it provides you with the chance to perform in many different kind of ensembles, and not just a band.
