I played a Meinl-Weston 45SLP, a Culbertson Apollo, and a Yamaha 621. Both of the former had to be finessed in the low register, the latter did not. Both of the former had a smoother, more distant sound, the latter was more direct and present. As to projection, I could not really tell. I liked the 621 when I got there and learned nothing that changed my mind while I was there, but I use an F tuba in situations where "direct" and "present" are attributes, like "clarity."
