I hadn't thought of the vacuum cleaner idea, but it should work. My whole idea is to get the foam "plug" to insert as far down the bell as possible, so that when the horn is in the case, the entire bell section is, in effect, sandwiched between two layers of foam. What you said about preloading the stresses on the bell is what I think would make it work. Is essence using the plug as an internal support to keep the structure of the bell intact, even if it is dented.
