I have seen a few votes for the Bach 24AW below. My own opinion is that it's a bit too deep to be ideal for a beginner. I also think that the rim inhibits flexibility. I recognize that mouthpieces are very personal thing and that not everyone agrees with this.

My own vote for the "ideal" starter mouthpiece is the PT-72. It combines a moderate size with a comfortable rim and great response. It produces a nice, lively sound without requiring a lot of effort. The big drawback is the cost. My budget recommendation would be a Bach 18 or Bach 18 copy.
