If you can afford it, get both the Conn Helleberg and the Conn Helleberg 7B. You could check them both out then and the 7B would be ideal for your son to start. I use it with my elementary school kids because the cup is not so big. The one problem with the Conn Hellebergs is the rim is flat and has a sharp edge on the inside rim which many people do not like. But a beginner would not know any better and just get used to it. If you think you might like that style of mouthpiece with a rounder rim try the Shilke Helleberg or the Bach 22 which is very close.
