Billy,
Now-a-days it would be "almost" easier to say what the worst under-8K tubas are,
there are just so many choices out there AND any one of the previously-mentioned horns may turn out to be "the best" for YOU, BUT it also may (in time) not be as versatile as you need...or (in time) not turn out to work well for you at all! Without knowing you and how you play it's also hard to suggest a horn. What does your teacher say?

Try to remember that there are "pet" horns that will be mentioned more because they are currently trendy or discussed by particularly vocal individuals, or even (dare I say) being offered by dealers. I am not suggesting these would be bad horns for you, just that we're a loose-knit-enough forum that you need to think twice about the inputs you get
here.

Now, to speak more directly to your question: "best" blind choice basic 4/4 now-a-days
still has to be a Mirafone 186. There's a reason you've heard that ever since you started playing tuba. And they are consistently better than ever now-a-days. At under-5k you honestly can't lose!

Travel costs are relatively cheap, with advance planning like under 200 airfare, and for that you can get pretty much anywhere in the country to try horns. If you're seriously shopping, this is definately something to consider. What does your teacher say?
