Tim,
There is a specific tool, a valve port alignment tool, which brass instrument repairmen should all have, which accurately measures both the up- and down stroke of the piston, from which they can accurately measure how much cork and felt is necessary to get optimum alignment. I have found that I can remedy much of the response and intonation problems on many horns simply by measuring and custom-fitting corks and felts that make everything line up correctly. In the trumpet world, Mr. Bob Reeves has made a tremendous name for himself, using space-age materials instead of cork and felt for precision valve alignments, and doing some minor machining of the piston stems and top caps. I plan to try some alternative materials for alignment of my York tuba pistons in the near future, and I'll report the results on the BBS.
