Are you talking about the clamps, that clamp the two parts of the mute together, or the clips on the elastic that hold it in the bell? The clamps on the sides hold the two parts of the top of the mute together. I have had no problem with either the clamps or the elastic and clips. They just clip under the bell rim and do a pretty good job of holding it in place, although I think the total weight of it and the rubber gasket would hold it in place without them.

All that said, I think that a good practice mute is probably a better, and certainly cheaper solution. They may not dampen as much of the sound, but they are certainly a lot lighter which prevents the top heavy feeling of the Silent Brass and would be a lot easier to travel with.
