I have been playing now for only a bit over a year. I joined a community band about 8 months ago and feel I am progressing well. I had the same problems in learning new music initially but now feel I can manage new music pretty well, depending on how difficult it is. I found that a big help for me was to periodically take a cassette recorder to practice and record the session. I bought a boombox tape recorder with a built in mike that does a fairly good job of recording. Now I can practice at home by playing along with the rest of the band. It works great for me. Practice and time will help you do a better job of sightreading.
