This isn't exactly scientific explantion but I do have a wee bit of experince with this very subject. I was in a rehearsal with the Pacific Universtiy wind ensemble. (which is a tiny university in tiny tiwn in oregon) The director who was formely the director of the Navy Commodores and one of the top Navy bands kept saying that I was behind his beat and the rest of the band. I couldn't understand why, because I was right on his baton beat. It kept happening through the entire rehearsal; finally he had a sudden epiphany and moved me to center of the band (in the back row of course) and like magic I was playing in time. Originally I was set up to the left of the center of the and I was pressed up against a slanted wall. When I moved there was no wall within 20ft of me. I
don't know what this explains or even if it is prudent to the topic just .02 cents.
