I asked a class of reasonably intelligent high schoolers today to spell and define tubist. They almost all spelled it correctly, but definitions were spotty; most had to do with floating down a river in inner tubes.
When I asked them about tubaist, all of them spelled it correctly and almost all of them defined it correctly. They thought it was far more self-explanatory than tubist. However, many of them know that I'm a tuba player.
