Chuck,

When I go to try out horns, I generally will play a little bit of everything. Solos, excerpts, etudes, scales, etc. Honestly, the best thing that I've ever played on a horn to get a decent feel is the 1st Suite in Eb, 1st mvt. The opening line is very good to check the connection, sound, and stuffiness of a horn, while that same lick comes back later to allow you to check the sound when you articulate more than usual. Just my opinion.

Sincerely,
