I see your point, and one I would certainly use in certain circumstances. And I do know very well about british players using other instruments than EEb as well (it sounds like you think I'm british, am I right? Well, I'm not). It's just that particular sound characterisic that you get from an EEb rather than a CC. For example, I would find it stupid, to say the least, to play Berlioz on a 6/4 CC. Even as big as EEb may cause problems at times. That's the kind of difference I'm thinking of, the tone colour of bass versus contrabass tubas (versus cimbasso if you want to strech it farther) and the difference in colour they may bring to the brass section. And with a wise choice of mouthpiece with the EEb, balance of tonal weight should really not be a problem.
