Flame you? Aw heck no! A very good post, Matt.

The school I attended had an ear training class which was required for all music majors. It was offered first semester. The professor was hell-bent on weeding out the least likely to succeed, and he did a heck of a job at it. You had to pass the class to declare music as your major, and some exceptionally gifted performers crashed like the Hindenberg. Is it right to shatter the dreams of someone who can't hear a French sixth or beat a 5/4 rhythm with their left hand whilst beating a 3/4 with the right (you got extra points for doing it while hopping on one foot and whistling 'Yankee Doodle' with a mouthful of saltines. Just kidding)? I don't presume to know, but it culled the herd pretty fast.

The business end of music is very much ignored, and that's not fair to kids who live in musty practice rooms eating ramen noodles. They may graduate with a degree, but without a knowledge of business, they will still be eating ramen.
