When I have the rotors out of a horn, I clean them to the point that normally it is very easy to see the markings and get everything back in the right place. Be advised though that there are a few instruments out there, mostly antique or from exotic locales, that are numbered differently, or not at all. I love the old Conn tubas that have every top cap, bottom cap, piston, etc. clearly marked, and the horn's serial number on each piston. To me, that was craftsmanship and class.
