He already has the small bore straight tenor, and won't be getting rid of it. For one thing, it's the perfect "field horn"; for another, as you note, it has uses that aren't quite right for a bigger trombone.
We don't throw away, or trade away..we're pack rats. When he eventually acquires a Bass Trombone, it will be IN ADDITION to what he has at the time. But, he knows that that will be some time in the future. I told him two years ago that Bass Trombones are purchased with the money made by playing Tenor Trombone...
