My advice is to wait a year, if possible. I have a 9th-grade student that switched to tuba from euphonium at the beginning of this school year, and he's not ready yet to own his own horn. Why? Because he's still figuring out how to fill up the school's St. Petersburg. There's no way for him (or me, at this point) to make an accurate determination as to what horn will best serve him through high school and possibly college.

Unless the school's horns are abominably bad (read: unplayable - a distinct possibility), let him play the school horn until he gets a really good feel for the demands of playing a larger instrument. Also, a few months of lessons with an advanced player or pro would be money better spent at this point than spending $XXXX on a tuba that may or may not be the right choice. When purchasing a tuba, patience, timing, and some good advice from a pro can save you big buck$.

My opinion...
