Playing the tuba is a very rewarding experience...unfortunately not the most financially rewarding. This is not to say that in a few years your child will not be a highly competitive musician for the big scholarship money but the college I went to saved its money for the hard to get instrumentalists like bassoon or oboe, those darn double reed players. Every college has its needs and they vary from year to year. Some years its celli or bass players..sometimes its double reeds or even french horn players. As for the horn I agree with the above posts..let the boy play the school horns and get used to playing the tuba. Once he reaches a certain level then let your search begin. a good tuba can range from $2,500-$15,000 plus. thats used to new BBb to CC. But I am sure he will go far in any of his future endeavors with such a supporting parent as yourself.
FWIW...INHO...and all that
