I have used solfege with success with some of my band students. These students are also involved in choir, so they came in with solfege already learned. What I have found is that the students excel in their musical abilities once they find the connection between solfege and their band music. Unfortunately, when my band students arrive in my classroom, most of them have had three years of playing already with no singing. My biggest goal, vocally in my band, is just to get everyone to match pitch, then we'll see where it goes from there. But if you do have a student that shows interest, go for it.
