Rick said what you wanted to hear. The other two, however, gave it to you as fact from the behind-the-mouthpiece angle.

All are correct in what they said. 1)the plating is stripped 2)the rim is smoothed (filing and sanding, or filling and then filing and sanding) 3)the mouthpiece is buffed to a mirror finish 4) the mouthpiece is degreased (it must have no grease or oil residue for plating to stick) 5) there is a copper strike, followed by silver plate or nickel, followed by gold plating. Now you have a refinished mouthpiece.
