Milan at about the turn of the century maybe through the start of WWII. There are evidently a lot of very strange old low brass critters wandering around sunny Italy and this was one of them. I may still have a photo of the beast if you're interested.

Cazzani-Rampone is still around, but they make saxes now; Kalison acquired a lot of their tooling and talent. If you go to the Kalison web page, look at the Daryl Smith rotary BBb and imagine it on steroids--same tubing layout.

This one is odd because of the huge bore and very slow taper (the bottom bow is smaller than the one on my Besson 983 eefer), but the bell flares rapidly to about 22.5". The rotors weigh a ton. Very open blow, obviously, but dicey intonation near the top of the staff. And very loud. I can only imagine it was built as a band instrument.

Definitely one for the curiosity shop.
