My advice would be to try to go to a conference and play as many horns as you can find. Do not look at labels, brands or prices. After playing them all, go back and pick your favorite three or four. Then go some place relatively quiet and spend some time on each. Have someone else listen, as well. After finding "the" horn, see what you like best. I did just that. I went to the conference in Lexington, KY convinced that I did not like Sterlings or 12 inch bells. I played 20 some odd horns and came down to a Hirsh, a Besson, a Yammy and a Sterling. The 12 inch, rose brass beneath the silver Sterling took the day.. I hope you have a similarly enlightening experience.
