Well, I am a FRENCH HORN player, and I can free-buzz a pedal Bb (a _tuba_ pedal Bb) with recognizable pitch. The only big tubas I've played were CC's, and I can really rattle the rafters with the pedal C's on them. If I had bigger lungs I'd be a tubist. It isn't worth much to be able to play a 1-second pedal tone.
