How it affects your sound completely depends on how you are taught to play and march. In bands and corps, I work with my students to play a big, full, beautiful, relaxed sound. Yet at times I know this is marching band or corps and there are times (note I said times...it's not okay to play loud all the time)when it is okay to let go and really blow. Even then, I don't allow my students to get crass. There is a difference between a concert fortissimo and an outdoors fortissimo, yet both should always be played with a good sound.

As someone else mentioned, how you march can really affect your embouchure. Bad marching technique will wear you down.

For the anti-drum corps crowd, read what Dr. Fennell has to say about corps....
