Frank,
I really wish that conn would make a production run of the bells, at least, if not of the entire 2XJ line. At ITEC, I overheard someone say that they were told by a UMI official that if they made a minimum production run of 2XJ's, they would have to be priced at about $12,000.00 each. Tooling up and building those big tuba bodies would be quite a task. However, to reissue the bells, I believe, would be much less of a problem. The bell collar is still a production item, as is the bell flare, which is available from the 20K sousaphone. Essentially, they could make the straight bell throat and the approx 70% recording bell throat(as opposed to the sousaphone bell throat, 90%), and assemble all three bell styles with only two additional parts to manufacture. There would be the protective guard moulding for the back of the recording bell, but that is a small issue.
If UMI doesn't do something about this situation, maybe I will. I'll keep y'all posted if I come up with a solution.
