Whatever happened to the days when John Fletcher would bring his 6/4 Holton for such works? I recall a picture of George Wall playing what appeared to be an Alexander 168 Kaiser. And there's another much more recent picture of Stephen Wick holding a 5/4 Hirsbrunner CC. What caused the current trend to do the big stuff on an Eb?

In terms of color, I'm not at all buying that an Eb has more color than a York-style tuba. The thing that most impressed me about Mike Sanders's sound when he switched from his Alex to the Yorkbrunner was the color and character. His sound had a great warmth and omnipresence that wasn't predicated on the bass trombonist using a tuba mouthpiece. The Alex was to me dark and commanding, not colorful in the same way at all.
