I think it is the shape or geometry of the horn ( especially the bell area ) that determines the projection qualities and sound of the horn. The Alexander tubas have tall bells with little flare like the other German rotary tubas. The Alexander sounds quite a bit darker than a Miraphone because even though the bells are similar, the Alexander bell has a fatter throat. I think the shape of the bell ( especially the throat taper ) has the biggest effect on sound output.
