Sometimes the truth hits home like nothing else.
I was commenting that I had a CD recording of the 1969 Jean Shepherd monologue "Half Time Sousaphone" to the kid (who has a young boy of his own) who is a section mate in one of the bands I play in.
He said, "Oh, I know who Jean Shepherd is--grandpa likes him."
"...and just how old is grandpa?", I asked.
Him: "Oh, he's 56."
Me: "So, your 56-year old grandpa is actually a great-grandpa to your son, huh?"
Him: "Yeah"
Me: Wimpering and limping out the bandroom with my horn in tow...
