I think it has to do with what you're most comfortable with. I haven't shaved underneath my lip for several years. One day while shaving I decided to do away with the soul patch, and found that there was no comfortable place on my face for me to put my mouthpiece. Likewise, if I grow 1/10th of a mustache, it makes my mouthpiece feel very "out of place" on my lips.
Roger Bobo has a moustache, but keeps it trimmed away from his mouthpiece. Looks... interesting.
