The curious thing about the monster eefers is how they changed over time. I've got an 1890's (York and Son) version and a 1920's version (York and Sons) model. The older one is considerably more beefy (side/top bow has a cap as well as the wide guard wire, while the 20's version has only the 1/4" guard wire) and taper of the top and succeeding bows is slightly different. And the ferrules are about half-again as wide.

I don't have it in playing condition yet, but I wonder how the differences will affect intonation and overall sound. The brass also seems somewhat softer than the later models and the silver plating is much heavier.
