I use a mixture. It really all depends on what is more comfortable, and where you are on the neck. I find that using the fourth finger can be hard on the lower strings of electric bass, especially if you have a five-stringer. So, when I need to play on low strings I use three and four together. But on the higher strings, I can use three alone or four alone. The ring finger is much stronger than the pinky, and can stretch better becasue it is longer. So I also use just the third finger alone most frequently. But when I am in need of a long stretch I use the fourth finger. It REALLY depends on where you are on the neck. ALWAYS try to make yourself use the fourth and third finger alone because that is the only way to build the dexterity and make it stronger. That way when you need to make a jump, you will have the strength. But also keep in mind what feels more comfortable. It will be awkward at first but try to use the fourth finger alone. This is what I do.
