I started out playing piano, guitar, tuba, then electric bass, and string bass, in that order, retaining the last three in regular practise. When I got into playing el. bass, I didn't have much of an organized fingering approach until I started playing string bass and picked up the book, "The Evolving Bassist" by Rufus Reid. It's primarily a jazz string bass method that addresses problems in el. bass as well and got me on a path in using a consistent fingering method on both basses. Basically, I use 1-2-4 until further up the neck in some "extended" patterns where it makes more sense to add third finger.
