Playing string bass with the 1, 2, 3-4 (three finger) pattern is about providing the fourth finger strength by using it together with the third. Unlike string bass, electric bass does not require much strength. Stamina sometimes, but little strength. Electric bass can easily be played with the four finger pattern. You can still play each scale from the different positions on the neck with four fingers (kinda like alternate fingerings on tuba). My string bass is always amplified, so I lowered the bridge. It's much easier to fret, so I use four fingers on it too. The real trick with e-bass is learning three or four finger techniques for the plucking hand...
